Cat Bathing: When and How To Do It
Do Cats Really Need Baths?
Most healthy cats maintain their coat through self-grooming. Bathing is needed for obesity, long-haired breeds, skin conditions, or toxic substance exposure.
Preparation
- Trim nails 24 hours before the bath
- Brush thoroughly to remove mats (water tightens them)
- Place a non-slip mat in sink or tub
- Fill with 2-3 inches of lukewarm water
The Bathing Process
Wet the body from neck down. Avoid face, ears, and eyes. Apply cat-specific shampoo and lather gently. Rinse thoroughly.
Face Cleaning
Use a damp washcloth without shampoo. Never pour water over a cat's head.
Drying
Wrap in a warm towel immediately. Blot and squeeze fur. For long-haired cats, use 2-3 towels. Keep in warm room until dry.
Frequency
Once every 4-6 weeks is sufficient. Over-bathing strips natural oils and causes dryness.
