Multi-Cat Household Harmony Guide

Why Cat Conflicts Happen

Cats are territorial by nature. In multi-cat homes, conflicts arise from competition over resources and insufficient territory.

The Resource Rule

Provide N+1 resources where N is the number of cats. For 3 cats: 4 litter boxes, 4 food stations, distributed across different rooms.

Proper Introductions

New cats should be isolated in a separate room for 1-2 weeks. Exchange scents through bedding swaps. Full integration takes 2-8 weeks.

Vertical Territory

Cat trees, wall shelves, and window perches create separate territories vertically. Provide multiple high spots.

When to Intervene

Hissing and swatting are normal. Intervene only for prolonged staring, blocking doorways, or one cat consistently hiding.
