Cat Body Language: Quick Decoder Guide
Why Body Language Matters
Cats communicate primarily through body language. Misreading their signals leads to unwanted scratches and damaged trust.
Tail Signals
- Tail up, slight curve: Happy, confident, greeting
- Tail puffed (bottle brush): Frightened or agitated — do not approach
- Tail thrashing: Irritated or overstimulated — stop petting immediately
- Tail tucked under body: Anxious or submissive
Ear Positions
- Ears forward: Alert, interested, relaxed
- Ears sideways: Anxious, uncertain
- Ears flattened back: Fearful or aggressive — back off
Eye Signals
- Slow blink: Trust and affection. Slow blink back!
- Dilated pupils: Excitement, fear, or play mode
- Narrowed pupils with direct stare: Aggression or challenge
Body Posture
A cat lying on its back with belly exposed shows trust — but it's not always an invitation to touch the belly. Many cats will bite if you reach for the exposed belly.
Vocalization Clues
Short meows are greetings. Trills indicate excitement. Yowling signals distress. Hissing with an arched back means stay away. Purring usually means contentment.
