Cat Supplements: Worth the Money?
Do Cats Need Supplements?
Cats eating a complete, balanced commercial diet typically get all the nutrients they need. However, specific life stages, health conditions, and dietary restrictions may create gaps that targeted supplementation can address.
Supplements With Evidence
Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil)
Benefits: reduces inflammation, supports joint health, improves skin and coat quality. Dose: 30-50 mg EPA+DHA per kg body weight daily. Look for products specifically formulated for cats (human supplements may be too concentrated).
Probiotics
Benefits: supports gut health during antibiotic treatment, stress, or dietary transitions. FortiFlora (Purina) and Proviable (Nutramax) are well-researched brands with proven efficacy in cats.
Glucosamine/Chondroitin
Benefits: may slow cartilage degradation in cats with arthritis. Dasuquin for cats is the most studied product. Effects take 4-6 weeks to become noticeable.
Supplements With Limited Evidence
- Lysine: Once popular for herpesvirus, recent studies show minimal benefit
- Cranberry: Popular for UTIs but lacks strong feline-specific evidence
- Multi-vitamins: Unnecessary for cats on balanced diets, risk of overdose
- Hemp/CBD: Promising for anxiety but dosing research is still early
Supplements to Avoid
- Human supplements (wrong doses, potentially toxic ingredients)
- Garlic supplements (toxic to cats)
- Essential oil supplements (many are toxic to cats)
The Bottom Line
Invest in a quality diet first. If supplementing, choose products with veterinary research backing and discuss with your vet before starting any new supplement.
