Cat Supplements: Do They Actually Work?

Cat Supplements: Do They Actually Work?

When Supplements Make Sense

Most healthy cats on a balanced diet do not need supplements. However, specific conditions and life stages may benefit from targeted supplementation.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Fish oil supplements reduce inflammation, support skin and coat health, and may help with kidney disease. Look for products with EPA and DHA from wild-caught fish.

Probiotics

Feline-specific probiotics (FortiFlora, Proviable) support gut health, especially during antibiotic treatment or dietary transitions. Human probiotics are not suitable for cats.

Joint Supplements

Glucosamine and chondroitin may help senior cats with arthritis. Results take 4-6 weeks. Cosequin for cats is the most studied brand.

What to Avoid

Never give cats human supplements, vitamin D supplements, or garlic supplements. These can be toxic. Always consult your vet before starting any supplement.
