Norwegian Forest Cat: Breed Profile
Breed Overview
The Norwegian Forest Cat, or Wegie, is a large, sturdy breed with a water-resistant double coat. Originating from Scandinavia, they are adapted to harsh winters.
Physical Characteristics
Males weigh 12-16 pounds, females 9-12 pounds. They have a muscular body, triangular head, tufted ears, and a bushy tail. The coat comes in all colors and patterns.
Personality
Wegies are gentle, friendly, and independent. They enjoy human company without being clingy. Good with children and other pets. They retain playful energy into adulthood.
Health Considerations
Generally healthy, but prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and glycogen storage disease type IV. Hip dysplasia occurs more frequently than in other breeds.
Grooming Needs
The thick double coat requires brushing 2-3 times per week, daily during shedding season. Despite the heavy coat, they are surprisingly low-maintenance compared to Persians.
