Cat Eye Care: Cleaning and Warning Signs
Normal vs. Abnormal Eye Discharge
Small amounts of clear or slightly crusty discharge in the corners are normal, especially in brachycephalic breeds like Persians. However, yellow, green, or bloody discharge requires veterinary attention.
How to Clean Cat Eyes
What You'll Need
- Sterile saline solution or cat eye wipes
- Soft cotton balls or gauze pads
- Treats for rewards
The Technique
Moisten a cotton ball with saline. Gently wipe from the inner corner outward, using a fresh cotton ball for each eye. Never use the same cotton ball for both eyes to prevent cross-contamination.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Squinting or keeping one eye closed
- Excessive blinking or pawing at eyes
- Cloudy or blue-tinged cornea
- Third eyelid visible (nictitating membrane)
- Sudden change in eye color
Breed-Specific Concerns
Persians, Himalayans, and Exotic Shorthairs are prone to tear staining and entropion. Clean their eye area daily and schedule annual ophthalmologic checkups.
