Senior Cat Mobility: Signs and Support
Recognizing Mobility Issues Early
Cats are masters at hiding pain. By the time limping is obvious, the problem may be advanced. Watch for subtle signs: reluctance to jump, shorter jumps than usual, stiffness after napping.
Common Causes
Osteoarthritis affects over 60% of cats aged 10+. Other causes include hip dysplasia (common in Maine Coons), spinal issues, and obesity.
Home Modifications
- Add ramps or steps to favorite high perches
- Use low-sided litter boxes for easy entry
- Place food and water on the same floor as sleeping areas
- Provide orthopedic beds with memory foam
Supplements That Help
Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil), glucosamine, and green-lipped mussel extract have shown benefits. Discuss dosing with your vet.
Veterinary Options
Solensia (frunevetmab) is a monthly injection specifically for feline osteoarthritis pain. Gabapentin and meloxicam are also used.
