Cat-Proofing Your Home: Room-by-Room Guide
Why Cat-Proof?
Cats are curious climbers. Household items that seem harmless — strings, plants, medications — can be deadly. A systematic room-by-room check prevents accidents.
Kitchen Hazards
- Secure trash cans with lids
- Store cleaning products in locked cabinets
- Keep onions, garlic, chocolate, and xylitol out of reach
- Check under appliances for hiding spots
Living Room
- Secure loose wires and cords with cable management
- Remove toxic houseplants (lilies, pothos, philodendron)
- Check recliners before closing — cats hide underneath
- Anchor tall bookshelves to the wall
Bathroom
- Keep toilet lids closed (especially with cleaning tablets)
- Store medications in sealed containers
- Check that window screens are secure
Bedroom
- Keep small items (rubber bands, hair ties) in drawers
- Check closet floors before closing doors
- Ensure ceiling fan blades are out of jumping reach
Balcony and Windows
Install cat-safe screens or netting on all windows above ground floor. Falls from heights (high-rise syndrome) are a leading cause of emergency vet visits.
