Cat Grooming at Home: A Beginner Guide
Why Groom Your Cat at Home?
Regular grooming keeps your cat healthy and strengthens your bond. While cats are self-cleaners, they still benefit from human help with brushing, nail trimming, and ear cleaning.
Brushing Basics
Short-haired cats need brushing once a week. Long-haired breeds like Persians need daily attention. Use a slicker brush for removing loose fur and a metal comb for tangles.
Nail Trimming
Trim nails every 2-3 weeks. Press the paw pad gently to extend the claw, then clip just the clear tip. Avoid the pink quick, which contains blood vessels.
Ear Cleaning
Check ears weekly for wax buildup or dark debris. Use a vet-approved ear cleaner and cotton balls — never cotton swabs inside the ear canal.
Bathing
Most cats rarely need baths. If necessary, use lukewarm water and cat-specific shampoo. Keep sessions short and reward with treats afterward.
