Cat Scratching Furniture: Real Solutions
Why Cats Scratch
Scratching is essential behavior — it removes dead nail sheaths, stretches muscles, and marks territory. You cannot stop it; you can only redirect it.
Choosing the Right Scratching Post
The post must be taller than your cat fully stretched (minimum 30 inches), sturdy, and covered in sisal rope.
Strategic Placement
Place posts near sleeping areas and near furniture they currently target. A post next to the sofa is more effective than one in a corner.
Positive Reinforcement
Reward scratching on appropriate surfaces with treats. Catnip on posts increases attraction. Never punish scratching.
Making Furniture Less Appealing
Double-sided tape, aluminum foil, or plastic sheeting makes surfaces unappealing. Combine with attractive alternatives.
